An Arts Outreach Program
Where Art and Soul Meet Divine Inspiration
2018 Year in Review
ARTFUL SPIRIT CONNECTION
In 2018, Artful Spirit Connection entered its second year of its diocesan grant. Artful Spirit kicked off the Lenten season with images and drawings by Bill Lagerstrom and Paula Baines to decorate the bulletin covers during Lent. Paula Baines provided pastel posters for the Easter Season exhibit for Art in the Sacred Space.
A second field trip to the Colby Museum took place in April. Bill Lagerstrom led a small group: Fr. Rick Cross, Paula and Jim Baines through the museum. Bill is a docent at the Colby Museum of Art.
Artful Spirit Connection hosted Discovering Your Inner Wisdom: a Soul Collage ® Workshop on Saturday, June 16, 2018 at 12 noon. The presenters were Christine Talbott and Lisa Cohn. Eight people participated. Soul Collage ® is a wonderful method for personal development that engages a person’s intuition in a creative way.
An Artful Spirit Connection Retreat: Paula Baines, Bill Lagerstrom, Lee White, Rick Cross and Peggy Day met at Rick’s farm for a retreat in June. They discussed what had gone well, what had been accomplished since the grant, and challenges that the program faced. Ideas included people did not see themselves as artistic, perhaps more creative or they enjoyed crafts. Leaders shared how we could encourage creativity in different forms, getting more art on the walls, art camp for kids, and collecting and giving away art supplies to local children. As a group, we were small and what we could do to invite others to participate. Deacon Peggy Day announced that due to new commitments, she was stepping down from Artful Spirit.
Art Camp Discussion: Fr. Rick Cross, Paula Baines, Bill Lagerstrom, Lee White, and Christine Talbott met in August to discuss a possible kids’ art camp. After the meeting, and various discussions during coffee hours, it was decided it was not the right time to plan such endeavor.
Art Kits: Over the summer, Artful Spirit invited church members to donate art supplies for children. Pat Blethen and Paula Baines decorated small bags with the logo. Art supplies were sorted by type. Artful Spirit Connection hosted a table at Brewer Days on September 8. Vicky Montgomery oversaw a beaded bracelet activity; 39 surveys were completed and 60 art kits were handed out to families. It was well received by the families in attendance. We will meet in early 2019 to plan out activity offerings. Special thanks given to Vicky Montgomery, Pat and David Blethen for assisting at Brewer Days. It was a big hit. We are considering doing it again.
Summer Exhibit: Over the summer, Paula Baines displayed her photographs of her park visit to Nova Scotia.
Advent Art: Paula Baines, Lee White and Jamie Beck hung their art representing Advent from dark to light, in art and verse in the Art in the Sacred Space gallery.
Artful Spirit Connection group met January 2019 to discuss the direction of the outreach program.
Respectfully submitted, Paula Baines
